It is a global day set aside to increase awareness of epilepsy, also known as seizure disorder, and to debunk popular misconceptions and concerns about this common neurological illness. It also focuses on reducing the social stigmas connected with the disorder and encouraging people living with it to seek treatment rather than withdrawing into their shells, as recurring seizures can cause brain damage and put one in harm's way. Epilepsy is caused by a variety of factors, the majority of which are unknown. Known causes can be congenital or acquired (infection and trauma amongst others).

Epilepsy is symbolized by the color lavender all over the world. The lavender flower depicts loneliness, which epilepsy patients often feel. Today is Purple Awareness Day, and we are urged to wear purple and raise awareness.

  1. Great read. The social stigma they experience is not talked about enough. This post is quite enlightening.
